Etta James

The concert was great!. The band was very tight, and Etta was in really good voice. She's lost a lot of weight, more than I think I was expecting, and looks quite different. She was pretty energetic the whole show, even when she was in her customized swivel chair. But she moved around a good bit. The set was a little short, and VERY blues heavy. I would have much preferred a Jazz oriented set myself, but it was still very good. The concert did require me to expend a lot of my personal reserve of self-control. So if I seem a little bit short with anyone for next couple of weeks, it's probably because there's not much patience left in the tank at this point.

And what it boils down to is that some people who go to concerts have no respect. Not for the artist, for the people around them, or for themselves. There were three people behind me that I had to finally ask to shut up, because they talked the entire fucking time. You know, every once in awhile, when there's something to say that relevant to the performance, you lean over and tell the person next to you in a voice that they can hear, but that hopefully won't disturb anyone else. But apparently if you're a 40 something New York gay Jew talking to two 19 year old girls, a conversation about fucking MySpace that everyone in a 15 foot radius can hear because your nasally voice cuts through beautiful sounds like those eminating from the mouth of Etta James like a big wet fart slices through silence in church right after the words, "let us bow our heads."

If I'm paying $20 for a concert, I expect that people are going to talk. And visit with people around them. I expect that I'm in a goddamn bar seeing a concert. If I'm paying more than $40 for a show, I want to listen to the person singing, or playing violin, or whatever. I don't want to listen to the drunk behind me talking to two girls whose daddies don't love them or care about them and mask the fact that they don't have time for them by buying them concert tickets and BMWs. And when I've also bought the ticket for my guest and forked up for dinner and I'm dropping $150 on the evening, yeah, I feel fucking entitled to turn around and politely tell you to please keep it down because you're making it difficult to enjoy the experience. Be happy that I'm not turning around, giving you a smile, and then laying your bitch-ass out on the floor.

And those stupid little bitches...the tickets explicitly say, "No Camera, No Recording." So I got a fucking string dangling by my ear where rude bitch number 1 is holding her fucking camera up to take 10 second videos and snap flash pictures. Where the fuck is security? I'm gonna contact HOB and complain on Monday. And find out what they would do if I had said something. Because if they say they'll check the camera and boot someone for doing it, next time I'm gonna head right for security if the person also can't keep their fucking mouth shut.

All that said, Etta was great. I'm glad I got the chance to see her live. I would have liked to have hung around after to get her autograph, but that just always seem so rude of me to do that I can never make myself.

The late night show was Mofro, who started at 2am. I though about staying but decided I didn't want to be completely assed-out for the rest of the weekend. I had been hoping to go see Umphreys McGhee tonight at the old Howling Wolf in the warehouse district, but I'm going to a party at 4 today and I'm thinking I might be pretty tired and wasted by the time that concert rolls around. If I didn't have so many people to see (parents, grandmothers, friends) it would be a weekend of non-stop concerts. Because the coolest thing about Jazzfest isn't the festival, it's that every artist in town for Jazzfest is also looking for another gig. So both weekends of Jazzfest there's always a lot of good shows to catch.

Tomorrow is the Blessing of the Fleet down in Lafitte, where my dad's fishing lodge is. So Shelly and Andy (her husband) and her dad and Helga (Andy's mom) and maybe a couple other people will be down there to BBQ and we'll watch the boats go up and down Bayou Barataria on their way to get blessed by the priest.

Sorry for the long and rambling blog update, but it's always a busy weekend when I'm back in New Orleans so computer time is pretty limited and I want to get everything in one big post rather than trying to do three or four of them. I hope everyone in Columbus is having a great time and doing something fun. See ya'll next week.

the show with zefrank

This guy made me giggle. Nicely done. If you're going to knock off Jon Stewart, you could do worse than decide to make it goofier, faster, and more intense. Knock off is a little harsh, but there's definitely a similarity. I may have to come up with a power move.

Yeah, there's nothing shady about this shit

Gas is 20¢ lower in Tupelo and Oxford than in Lowndes County? Why the hell is that?

"New Music Karaoke" Thursday Night

The disks arrived today, so it's "New Music Karaoke" on Thursday night. The alphabetized list with song numbers is here, feel free to browse. I really gots to finish that data base code so that the whole catalog is searchable from the web. I'd like to be able to do it so that you could check off songs to include in your list, print the whole thing, and then just bring the printout to the show and hand it in...aw SNAP! New project.

New photos

Pictures have been updated at the Karaoke Joe Galleries. Basically Thursday through Sunday morning. I didn't get any older galleries posted, but I'll try to get one or two new ones up with my next photo update (about 10 days). I'm gonna go check out the Michael Graves concert at the Princess a little later, but it's not going to be a late night for me. Too many of those this weekend.

Photos up Saturday

Photos from last night's show will probably go up on Saturday. I have a party to do tonight, and I'm not sure I'll have time to get them on there since I NEED to take a nap between work and the rest of the evening. I'm loving the new equipment, but setup and breakdown have effectively doubled. Boo.

I'll have more galleries from the past put back up tomorrow or Sunday, too.

Somewhere James van der Beek is crying

If you've never been to TheSupeficial, you're missing out. Check out the commentary and comments generated by the latest set of Katie Holmes pictures.

This whole thing is ridiculous. Tom Cruise is the new Michael Jackson, who now appears to be almost sane by comparison. The only good thing to come out of this pregnancy is...wait, I'm drawing a blank. Oh yeah, NOTHING.

U2's "One" named favorite British song lyric

U2 nabbed the top spot in a poll about song lyrics, but it wasn't even for the best line of the song, IMO.

LONDON - The Irish band U2 has given Britain its favorite song lyric, according to a survey released Monday.

The line "One life, with each other, sisters, brothers" from the 1992 song "One" topped a poll conducted by music channel VH1.

Runner-up was the downbeat "So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry, and you want to die" from The Smiths' "How Soon is Now."
Everyone knows that the best line in "One" is: "Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head."

That Smith's lyric is a particularly good one, although perhaps one of the saddest. Both of these songs are available in my karaoke catalog.

New galleries posted

OK, I've got about 5 more galleries from 2004 posted and the pictures from last Thursday's karaoke show are also up. You can find the gallery section by clicking here.

I also think I've worked my way around the MySpace issue that I was having. But the more I read about MySpace and how they operate, the less I care for the people who run it.

A couple of funnies

A couple of funnies before I get busy on last night's karaoke pictures.

Clever: Titanic 2: The Surface

Amber Alert/Celebrity Doctor: Has anyone seen Katie?

According to Patrice (of the Keith and The Girl podcast), Katie has already "had" the baby, which is why she looked so ridiculous in this photo. Personally, I think the baby they bought arrived a little earlier than expected. You can bet the new paparazzi sport in town will be trying to get a hair sample from the baby so they can DNA test it. Tom is nuttier than Michael Jackson, and possibly more dangerous. Although not as dangerous as:

Brittney Spears and Kevin Federline, WORST PARENTS OF THE YEAR. It's not enough to turn this kid's room into a nativity scene and make him play baby Jesus. It's not enough to drive around with the kid in your lap instead of the car seat where he belongs. Nope. When this kid falls out of his high chair, you don't take him to the doctor until his fractured skull causes him severe pain 7 days later. Creeps. Still, if it wasn't so funny, this video would be sad to watch. Are those Bratz sweatpants covering that expanding posterior? She can still kick pretty high, though.

Drunken stars

Astronomers have discovered an alcohol cloud that is about 287 billion miles long. After careful calculation, I've determined that this would be almost enough alcohol to put the entire country in a good fucking mood for the rest of the Bush presidency. Sadly, it's not Jaeger or tequila, or even vodka -- any of which would have been proof that there is intelligent life in the universe and, possibly, that there is, in fact, a god. But no, it's methanol, which isn't suitable for human consumption, and which is so completely ordinary that it inspires belief in absolutely nothing.

Karaoke Thursday at the Coffee Shop

OK, so Thursday night at 9:00 we're going to debut the initial number one screening of the first paramount premier of the return of Columbus Super Mecha Karaoke at the Coffee Shop (yeah, THE coffee shop). For you 'tards that are busily taking a shit in the Wingate's pool, that would be the coffee shop attached to the front of the Princess Theater.

This first Thursday is going to be somewhat experimental...

I have to figure out how I want everything set up. The stage will be somewhat improvised, and I have committed to taking a stab at using the PA that's in there, which I don't expect to be a permanent solution. But I totally expect that Karaoke will again be a permanent Thursday night fixture, 'cause it will be that much fun.

I'm tentatively planning on the following (tentative means it might change, but probably not this week):

- No cover
- I will have the projector set up
- I will be showing some kind of pre-karaoke entertainment

So dig up all those friends in low places and spread the word. Plan on being one of the first to usher in a New Gilded Age of Karaoke, the likes of which has never been seen upon earth! < insert evil laugh here >

OK, so maybe I got a little carried away. Also, ya'll need to convince them to put the benches back in. The place doesn't work with out the benches.

Most importantly...this means that the position of Karaoke Fluffer is again open as wide as the legs of a coked up Kate Moss. This is a very important job, and it is completely compatible with the Atkins diet. I would like to remind everyone that interviews are completely private and most definitely will not be video taped for distribution on the internet or for use as pre-karaoke entertainment.

I'm stoked, I hope ya'll are too.

Holy batshit, that was a lot of beer

A lot of fucking beer was consumed last night. Robbie and Peter helped me dig into the frig-o'-goodies and I actually got a little drunk. Hard to believe, I know. But trust me. The only thing missing to complete the night was a drunken trip to Wendy's and picking up shitty burgers and fries that we didn't want to eat, anyway.

Today it's a trip to Old Monk for something resembling lunch. After that I think we might be bowling or something, then there's still more beer to polish off back in the burb known as Frisco. Considering that everyone over 20 dresses like a metrosexual, I think the name is appropriate.
